Ovah is an extended reality system in the form of a physical installation and a virtual experience, which explores the relationship between liberation and constraint. The system is situated in the realm of ballroom, the underground queer subculture. It explores and reinterprets ballroom’s core dance move, vogueing, and its five elements. Ovah, a word in ballroom terminology, is a variation of ‘over’ or ‘over the top,’ which is usually used to describe excellence in a ball. It also represents the ability to ‘pass’ as a certain gender or sexuality in everyday society.
Ovah is a system but also a dramatic play; a play in which participants are both the audience and the performer; a play in which participants can unconsciously feel the transition and correlation of physical constraints and virtual liberation simultaneously; a play in which participants can develop new kinship through empathy and transcend their understanding of identity and queerness.
