Artemis

Project details

Programme
Tutors Stephen Gage,  Ruairi Glynn and Parker Heyl

In an age of severe environmental challenges, humans need an anti-anthropocentric perspective to see our equal and interdependent relationship with nature. Artemis aims to inspire members of the public about their underestimated power to understand ecosystem. The project explores an original way to build an immersive experience formed by bionic automata that mimic evolutionary forms to create an ecosystem.

Darcy Thompson used mathematics and physics to explain natural evolution and to show that parametric transformation underlies morphological patterns. Parametric design was used to create automata with the same mechanical principle. CAM mechanisms (computer aided manufacturing) drive bionic rhythmic behaviours like squirming, waving, and sound-making.

Automata are linked to each other and to several carbon dioxide sensors. Audiences are invited to interact with this ecosystem of automata, by simply breathing towards the carbon dioxide sensor, triggering the automata’s movements and a range of sounds.

The connection between the audience and this ecosystem is a reflection of the human-nature relationship. Each human individual is part of the unescapable interconnected system.
