Design for Manufacture

Programme Director: Peter Scully

Design for Manufacture investigates design at the point of physical production. Students develop tacit and explicit knowledge of design, engineering, material behaviour, analogue and digital craft, and advanced systems operations.

Based at Here East – UCL’s space for cutting-edge facilities – the course provides an opportunity to undertake ground-breaking research in the design and fabrication of architecture. Students engage, learn and innovate with advanced manufacturing processes to develop their own practice in conversation with multidisciplinary academics, designers and practitioners.

This year’s graduating students focused on architectural ceramics in an effort to meet the seventeen Sustainable Development Goals set out by the United Nations. The design propositions grew out of an intimate understanding of the wants of materials, processes and technologies. They examine whether the very thing that these resources ask of us in their transformations offers up alternative uses and applications that could help address urgent contemporary crises.
